Cleaning & Maintenance

Cleaning and Maintenance for RV Parts & Accessories

It is no secret that maintaining a Recreational Vehicle (RV) requires attention to detail. Cleaning and maintenance are key to the optimal performance and longevity of your RV. With routine maintenance, owners can ensure that their investment remains in excellent condition and in working order at all times.

Cleaning an RV can be a daunting task. To help make it easier, you can break down the process into three areas – exterior, interior, and engine.

Exterior

When cleaning the exterior of your RV, start with the roof and work your way down. Begin by rinsing the roof gently with a hose or a pressure washer. This helps to remove dirt and debris that may have accumulated. If a pressure washer is used, use a low-pressure setting with a wide spray pattern and avoid spraying directly into vents, seams, joints, or any other openings. After rinsing, apply a mild detergent and scrub the roof gently with a soft bristle brush. Rinse entire surface again and allow to air dry.

Next, clean the RV's siding and windows. You can wash these surfaces with the same mild detergent and brush as used on the roof. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive products, as they can damage the surface. Make sure to rinse off any remaining soap residue with a fresh water pressure washer and allow to air dry.

The tires should also be looked after during a cleaning session. Begin by inspecting all tires for any signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, bulges, or bald spots. If any damage is found, it’s best to replace the tire. Check all tires for proper inflation and adjust as needed. Clean tires with a tire cleaner and brush and use a tire protectant to keep them from cracking or fading. Finally, check the wheel wells for any rust or signs of potential water leakage.

Interior

When cleaning the interior of your RV, start with the ceiling and work down, then work your way back up. Vacuum any loose dust and debris, and wipe down any surfaces with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Be sure to get into all the nooks and crannies, as well as areas behind furniture and appliances. Give special attention to the kitchen area, as grease and oil build-up can cause problems later on. Use appropriate cleaning solutions on plastic and metal surfaces, and polish wood surfaces with a protective wax if desired.

If you have carpeted flooring, you may want to consider replacing it with vinyl or tile. Not only does carpet collect dirt and allergens, it can also hold moisture and become a breeding ground for mold. Any carpets that can’t be replaced should be vacuumed regularly and treated with a mild detergent to reduce allergens. Also, be sure to check for signs of water damage, staining, or odors in all interior surfaces and materials.

Engine

Your RV’s engine should also be given regular attention and maintenance. Change the oil and filter at least every 6,000 miles and check all other fluid levels. Top-off fluids as needed, and inspect belts and hoses to make sure they are in good condition. Have an experienced technician check the spark plugs, wires, and ignition system to ensure everything is functioning properly. Lastly, if your RV has a generator, make sure to give it a thorough cleaning and inspection to keep it running smoothly.

Cleaning and maintaining an RV can be a time-consuming task, but it is essential to maintaining your investment. Taking the time to properly care for your RV will ensure that it stays in top shape and runs reliably for years to come.
